Cups Double to kick start the New Year?
The LISTED 2000m City Tatts Cup at Rwick on New Years Day looks tailor made for the unlucky LYNCEAN ACADEMY. A most unlucky 5th in the Villiers, the little GALILEO gelding is vying for his first stakes win after placings in the McKell Cup and Japan Trophy back in the Autumn. Chris Munce takes the ride and the pair have built up a formidable partnership with a 4 length romp at Rwick over 1800m last summer, an emphatic victory in the Rowley Mile at Hbry and several placings. Whilst not successful over 2000m yet, he's won 7 races from 1400-1800m and been placed over 2400m.
Meantime, at the other end of the state, journeyman STUDIO STAR attempts a Cups double for PROVEN THOROUGHBREDS when lining up in the 1400m Inverell Cup with brilliant young apprentice Tim Bell to ride. It was at the same meeting 12 months ago that the 7yo recorded his last victory, in the 1010m Inverell Shorts. Young Bell rode that day and has been in the saddle for most of the horse's runs since he was sent north to Sue Grills after reaching his mark in Sydney. He's been a consistent money spinner with a trio of city victories to his credit at Rwick, W.Farm and Canterbury. A close last start 3rd at Tamworth has the old fella's hoof on the till!
It could be a handy way to start 2010. We'll also have improving 3yo SOUL CRUSADE stepping out to 1800m at Rwick on the same day. He's coming off a solid 1600m maiden breaker at Canberra and shapes as if the extra trip will suit. The year may conclude on the right note as well. Danehill Dancer mare, DANCING DOLL, heads up to Gosford Thurs (New Years Eve) for a Benchmark 60 event after demolishing a weak maiden field at Hbry.
It was ultimately a joyless Boxing Day for our horses at Rwick though one can't complain about the committment and effort of the duo concerned. DANE FONTAINE ran her usual honest race in the GROUP 3 SUMMER CUP, eventually finishing 6th and GURU, hampered by the affected track, ran a keen 5th in the lucky last. The DANE will now spell after a 9 run preparation that yielded a win at W.Farm, a trio of city placings, 2 fourths, a fifth and 2 sixths. GURU on the other hand is likely to head to Rhill in a few weeks. He's also a model racehorse only finishing further back than 6th on one occasion in an 18 run career.
